Reading enriches life — we score with reading

We score with reading

Next week, April 28–May 4, Norðlingaskóli will host a school-wide reading sprint for all students in grades 1-10 and staff. The goal is to foster a love of reading, build stamina, and create a positive shared experience for the entire school community.

This year's sprint features an exciting partnership with Fylkir's soccer division, meaningfully weaving together reading, well-being, and physical activity. The reading sprint is called:Reading enriches life — we score with readingArrangementStudents earn "balls" for the reading they complete throughout the week. Each ball represents a specific number of reading minutes based on grade level:. Grades 1-2: 10 minutes = 1 ball (yellow). Grades 3-4: 15 minutes = 1 ball (red). Grades 5-7: 20 minutes = 1 ball (green). Grades 8-10: 25 minutes = 1 ball (blue). School staff: 30 minutes = 1 ball (orange)Our collective goal is to fill the net in Mörkin, the school's main hall, with handmade paper balls, with each grade level represented by its own color.Every student will receive a dedicated log to track their reading both at school and at home. Students should read as much as possible — aloud or silently — and record their minutes and book titles in the log. We encourage parents and guardians to support reading at home and help their children fill out the log.  The homeroom teacher will total each student's minutes and initial the log to verify the number of balls earned. Students can color in the balls in their log using their grade's designated color.Students should also record any time spent listening to someone read aloud.Reading sprint opening ceremony — April 28 at 9:15 a.m.The principal will kick off the ceremony in the school's main hall. Coaches from Fylkir's men's and women's premier soccer teams will discuss how reading impacts both physical and mental well-being. Players from both premier teams will share their favorite children's or young adult books and read excerpts aloud.  Reading sprint closes May 4Coaches and players will return to visit classrooms and present joint certificates of recognition alongside teachers and school leadership. We encourage all staff and students to wear their grade's color on closing day. Students will also enjoy a lunchtime pizza party. Please support your child's reading at home — every minute makes a difference.Reading enriches life — now let's score together with reading.Best regards,The leadership and teachers of Norðlingaskóli
